...so I think people are starting to come around to my way of computer hacking.

Methinks you have confused the terms hacking(verb) and hack(noun)

Hacking in the 1960s and 1970s was used to describe an individual working with computers who was technically gifted. Many people in the industry still adhere to this definition, though it is not what is generally meant when used in the media or by those outside of the industry.

Hack describes an unskilled person or one who lacks technical acumen. It can also be used to describe a particularly ugly piece of code meant to be used as a temporary measure.

I realize that they're very similar, so it's an easy mistake to make.

Unless of course, you are using the newfangled definition of hacking which refers to computer related crime - in which case is this some kind of admission of guilt?

Wait! This isn't a Parachute, this is a Backpack!

Title:
Use:  <p> text here (a paragraph) </p>
and:  <code> code here </code>
to format your post; it's "PerlMonks-approved HTML":

  • Are you posting in the right place? Check out Where do I post X? to know for sure.
  • Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
    <code> <a> <b> <big> <blockquote> <br /> <dd> <dl> <dt> <em> <font> <h1> <h2> <h3> <h4> <h5> <h6> <hr /> <i> <li> <nbsp> <ol> <p> <small> <strike> <strong> <table> <td> <th> <tr> <tt> <u> <ul>
  • Snippets of code should be wrapped in <code> tags not <pre> tags. In fact, <pre> tags should generally be avoided. If they must be used, extreme care should be taken to ensure that their contents do not have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor intervention).
