Google totally uses RDBMSes where they need using (hint: not for storing inverted indexes or computing directions). http://www.mysql.com/customers///customer.php?id=75 They even hack on MySQL to make it work and scale better: http://code.google.com/p/google-mysql-tools/wiki/Mysql4Patches Not everything is a map-reduce job.
