I really think the plain-text thing is the elephant in the room that PerlMonks admins aren't talking about.
I would really appreciate a statement from someone explaining why they were stored in plain text. The whole thing is roughly as ironic as when Amazon removed "1984" from Kindles -- this is a place of wisdom, of Best Practice, of knowledge and years of study, and as everyone else is saying, we always tell people to encrypt passwords. Not doing so is a rookie mistake. The fact that PerlMonks didn't follow its own wise advice makes the whole site a laughing-stock, and Perl by association.
