I, personally, use Emacs (X usually, but I might switch to GNU) to code Perl, or anything else. For viewing files, I use less. Reasons:
XEmacs
- dired-mode
- elisp
- indentation
- multiple-buffer, multiple-frame
- customizable ** 2
- gnuclient
less
- /
- somewhat like vi, in case I need to use vi in the future
- lightweight
- runs in terminal

<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
