Thanks, Alex. That may have been what my friend was referring to. He said he wasn't sure if what he had in mind would work with tarred files.
I'm not sure how this squares with some of the other responses in this thread, though.

<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
