my @ch = (' ', '0'..'9', 'A'..'Z');
my $base = @ch;

(for small numbers you could space-pad the string on the left, if you like)
And the reciprocal procedure (string to number) could be
my @val;
$val[ ord($ch[$_]) ] = $_ for 0..$#ch;
my $s = ...
my $num = 0;
my $m = 1;
for (reverse split //, $s) {
$num += $m * $val[ ord($_) ];
$m *= $base;
}
print $num;

Posts may use any of the Perl Monks Approved HTML tags. Currently these include the following:
<code> <a> <b> <big>
<blockquote> <br /> <dd>
<dl> <dt> <em> <font>
<h1> <h2> <h3> <h4>
<h5> <h6> <hr /> <i>
<li> <nbsp> <ol> <p>
<small> <strike> <strong>
  <table>
<td> <th> <tr> <tt>
<u> <ul>
-
Snippets of code should be wrapped in
<code> tags not
<pre> tags. In fact, <pre>
tags should generally be avoided. If they must
be used, extreme care should be
taken to ensure that their contents do not
have long lines (<70 chars), in order to prevent
horizontal scrolling (and possible janitor
intervention).
