On a 1,000th Post

It is a Monastery Custom to mark the passing of significant events with a post of thanks. Though it isn't clear whether 1,000 posts^* is actually an accomplishment (as much as it a waste of perfectly good keystrokes), it is still a good point to pause, reflect, and express some well-earned appreciations.

First, my hearty thanks to vroom for getting this started, and a hearty thanks to he and his hench-people for keeping PM running.

My thanks to the editors for helping keep the Monastery tidy. A lot of quiet, volunteer, behind-the-scenes cleanup happens here, holding entropy bay.

My thanks to all, Saints and others, who have set such good examples with their well-written posts and thoughtful replies. I'm continually impressed by both the depth of thinking to be found here, as well as the patience many show when answering the same question the n+1st time. By following your example, I've learned quite a lot about both answering and asking questions, and hope that it sometimes shows.

My thanks to the many who have challenged my biases and beliefs. I wandered in here an intermediate Perl hacker at best, and have learned an immense amount of useful stuff, much of which is not to be found in any book.

And finally, my apologized for anyone I've offended inadvertently. Bonus points if you can make the "inadvertent" distinction. :)

Onward. There's work to be done.

I had all sorts of plans for this, my 100th post, to be a code review, but since I really do not feel that I measure up at this point, perhaps I'll wait a bit longer for that and, if you don't mind, piggy back on this node of thanks. This site has advanced my learning like nothing else, and I truly am thankful for the bounty put before us! I came to Perl with little understanding of how to get things done. Since finding PM, I'm able to get done a majority of the tasks I set out to accomplish, and I'm even getting to the point where I understand why there are 'better ways'™ to do it. I'm not a professional programmer and I don't have the opportunity to write Perl everyday. PM provides a regular dose of Perl challenges for me, lifting me out of my ASP/Tango malade de mer, imparting a structure and discipline in my exploration of the language, giving me an opportunity to analyze real world scenarios and the program design needed to deal with them. As I write this, the thought occurs to me that these words are all well and fine but nothing talks like cold hard cash, so it's off to the offering plate for me. Since this is a Meditation and I've already opened the confessional booth door, let me say that I truly am the most clueless Abbot in the monastery, but I hope someday to outgrow that distinction. I think the key is finding a source of Perl writing assignments. My day job does allow for some work on the side, so if anyone out there has a project that doesn't require übercoder skills but could still benefit from some meat an potatoes code writing, I'm your monk. It would seem to me that this is just as noteworthy of an event as any other, particularly if the note being made is one of thanks to the rest of the community. God help me when I've managed to knock out 1000 posts. That is, I mean... I look forward to that day. Yeah, that's what I meant. `--rjray`	[reply]

henchpeople should be a hyphenate (yeah you know me ;) Well it's been nice to read some of your posts ~ especially the real-world-experience stuff ... keep it up (well once in a while it's nice to be a little cheesy, so there) I'll buy a beer next time I see ya.	[reply]
