I am missing the option "Be happy"
      bah! (happy eq 'Uber-Coder') :-)

      or am i just "interesting"...?

    Hi,

I am going to win the lottery, so I can install a fitness center and get in shape. This way, I'll loose weigth.

Then I'll try to get a rich date, and I can start working for her dad as a perl coder.

If this isn't a new life, I don't know what is.

All of the above. Well, perhaps not the 'get a date' option as I don't think the ol' wifey would like that very much :-)

    -- vek --

So what's stopping you from taking your wife out on a date?

      --- print map { my ($m)=1<<hex($_)&11?' ':''; $m.=substr('AHJPacehklnorstu',hex($_),1) } split //,'2fde0abe76c36c914586c';
Ha ha! Well pfaut, I thought that 'get-a-date' implied finding someone as apposed to 'go-on-a-date' which would imply that you already had someone to go on a date with (which I do).

This year I *will* become an Uber-Coder!
Oh yeah, winning the lottery would be nice too.

I wonder how the 2003 poll will match up with last year's (this one here)?

As I said last year, I'm picking "get a life" since it includes almost all of the others. ("Become an über-coder" is also on my list, but not nearly as high... sadly, it's the most likely to happen.)

... to see Perl6 fully functional and healthy and showing its power and strengths.

As Perl6 parser is implemented via independent Perl5 module via Parse::RecDescent I would be happy if perl6 programs also could be run with Perl5 only without parrot engine, as well as with parrot installed.

It would be a great happy-plums for me

Ok. I chose "get a date" because, well, I'd like one. :) I'd also like to become a ubercoder. And get in shape. And get a life. Hmm. I'd like to win the lottery, too; however, winning the lottery would kind of precipitate the other options. Y'think? Maybe I should've picked that. Hmm.

I guess this year I actually have resolutions. A first for me.

    • get a laptop
    • finish my website engine
    • finish my album
    • get more financially resilient
Eh, for the most part, they're achievable. Hopefully so, eh? A good start, to be sure. Here's to 2003. Godspeed, y'all. (Good poll, by the way.)

Last year I lost wieght. 45 pounds to be exact. Now I need to regain the muscle I had before college, with its beer, internet accesss, and girls.

    Looking at the poll options:

Lose weight: Lost 35 pounds already, but can lose another 20 more to get my body mass index to a healthy range.
    Get In Shape: See above.
Money Related: Developing my businesses would help tremendously here.
Get a Date: Already have one. She lives in Georgia.
Become an Uber-Coder: What about uber-network admin?
Win the Lottery: I don't participate in the poor man's pension.
Get a life: Why? I already have one.
Get a (new)? job: They don't pay me enough where I'm at now. Anybody in the Atlanta/Macon GA area looking for someone who is A+ certified, currently pursuing a CCNA, and has experience in customer support to fill a help desk position?
Other: Relocate to Georgia for the above reasons (especially the one about my date).

Uh, all of the above? Good God, we're all living the stereotype: Fat, single, technology-obsessed geeks, now returned to the pre-internet days when the ability to write #!/usr/bin/perl didn't gaurantee $40K to start.

    • Lose weight: Yep, 12 hours a day in front of a keyboard will do that to you. So will turning 30 if you're not careful. This year, I intend to lose 20 pounds by Comic-con. To translate to perl:
      s/Comic-Con/Oreilly Open Source Con/g.
      s/San Diego/Portland/g
      s/Sun/Rain/g
    • Get In Shape: see above
    • Money Related: Yep, Bush's new tax cut for the hyper-rich oughta take care of that. Wait, sorry, wrong web site.
    • Get a Date: See "Get In Shape/Lose Weight". Ignore the part about comic books.
    • Become an Uber-Coder: Sadly, this pretty much requires biting the bullet and learning C. Maybe.
    • Win the Lottery : Hmm, odds of winning: 1 in 7 million. Yep, that's worth $1 a week.
    • Get a life : I have a life. I just need a better one.
    • Get a new job : Hopefully, this won't be neccessary.
    • Other: I am always open to other.

    Get a (new?) job.

I do have a job right now, but since 2 years i'm living in a city far away from most of my friends. I moved here cuz of a job opportunity, and ever since miss my old hometown and partying with my buddies. Plus my current job here became worse over time, alas I don't feel like staying here much longer.

So I'm hoping i'll be able to find a job back in my hometown, although the industry there isn't all that great, and it's quite hard to find anything decent there (judging from my last couple days of jobsearch).

    • Lose weight -- I can always keep trying I suppose.
    • Get In Shape -- Losing weight first would help.
    • Money Related -- Yeah. Make some retirement contributions.
    • Get a Date -- Got one. :)
    • Become an Uber-Coder -- Working on it. :) This place helps.
    • Win the Lottery -- Someone described lotteries as a 'Stupidity Tax'. At odds of 13 million to 1, I'll take mutual funds for $1000 please Alex.
    • Get a life -- Get one. :)
    • Get a (new)? job -- Heh, I really like the one I got in October. No thanks.

Altruism @ Microsoft
by BigLug (Chaplain) on Jan 09, 2003 at 03:09 UTC
Its great to see that the option to 'Win the Lottery' is coming last (at the moment). I guess the altruism probably comes with the open source movement. It'd be interesting to run the same poll inside Microsoft :)

Its great to see that the option to 'Win the Lottery' is coming last (at the moment). I guess the altruism probably comes with the open source movement.

Really? I thought it was because most people here understand how probability works :)

The lottery is basically a tax on the poor. Publicising people who win makes millions dream it could be them. What about publicising things that have a higher chance of happening to you. Every year the odds of certain events happening to you:

      • being struck by lightening and killed (4,210,857 to 1)
      • being electricuted (550,382 to 1)
      • dying while flying in air/space transport (250,032 to 1)
      • dying as the result of a fall (17,702 to 1)
      • dying in a motor accident (6,078 to 1)

Whereas the odds of winning the jackpot in the California Super Lotto Jackpot (for example), are about 18,000,000 to 1.

Sanity Check - what a bummer, eh?

      .02

      cLive ;-)

Update: To clarify, those stats above are per year, but the lotto odds are per entry, so they are a little screwy, but you get the idea :)

The lottery is basically a tax on the poor.

I like to think of it as a stupidity tax :)

work it harder make it better do it faster makes us stronger more than ever hour after our work is never over.
Interesting facts. But I've always wondered how these things are figured.

      • Being struck by lighting and killed (4,210,857 to 1)

Is this for the whole year or every second of everyday? Does that make any sense?

              --JD
I guess the altruism probably comes with the open source movement. It'd be interesting to run the same poll inside Microsoft

Yeah, if you ran it inside Microsoft you'd probably find people were actually contributing.

All this Microsoft bashing seen in the open source community is really pathetic. Microsoft's Chairman gives 5.5 Billion (yes, Billion) to charity and what have these supposedly "altruistic" open source hackers contributed? Well, probably an average of a couple thousand lines of code.

So these open source people are supposedly better? Any one who believes so is completely delusional.

Criticize Microsoft for predatory business practices, criticize them for not complying with standards, but do not delude yourself into believing the company, or the people who work for it are somehow lesser than you.

      Have a nice day.

I'm sorry you felt it best to remain an annonymous monk. If you want to argue something at least show your face. Membership here is completely free and is open to anyone.

Yes, Bill and Melinda Gate's foundation has given 5.5 Billion dollars to what you call 'Charity'. However I'd like to point out that for someone with a wage of 50K you can guess that their net worth might be about 300K (just a guess) compared to Gates net worth being about 450B. Extrapolating percentages this means that Gates has donated 1.2% of his net-worth. For our 300K person, 1.2% means donating 3.7K to charity.

Now, lets compare that to a 'couple thousand lines of code'.

To write this code, to debug it and to maintain it would take 30mins per line. (This is a guess based on my own experience of planning, writing, error-checking, maintaining and documenting). If we take 'couple thousand' to be 2000, then we're talking about 1000 hours. At 1000 hours, you'd be being paid $3.70 PER HOUR to be as 'altruistic' as Mr and Mrs Gates.

Next, can I point out that the Gates' gave 1.6 billion to 'Education'. Education donations are (annecdotally) in the way of Windows PCs to schools. These computers come with a one year licence to use MS software. At the end of that time, the schools have to either uninstall all the software or pay out huge amount for the licence renewals.

While I do not consider myself better than anyone, I do not think your arguments hold water. I will criticize MS for whatever I want and will especially criticize Mr Gate's supposed donations to 'Charity'. As Mr Gates does not know me, I cannot talk to him personally about my concerns about his money-grabbing practices. Instead what I can do is talk in such forums as these. I can make people aware of the differences between MS and OS ideologies. Maybe many of the serfs are as altruistic as OS contributors and may write OS in their own time (which their contracts with MS will say belongs to MS).

I am having a nice day. You do so to, Mr/Ms Anonymous.

Losing weight and getting into shape are closely connected for me. Since both didn't work out the past 2 years, I started going to a Shaolin Kempo (sometimes referred to as Chinese Karate) course. Four hours of this a week should do the trick ... I hope.
This is the only resolution I had for this year. I'll have lots to do anyway, since I just bought a house.

Except for losing weight, winning the lottery, and getting a date, I need everything else on here. 'Get A Life' can easily be seen as an "All Of The Above" option. I want a new job, I want to become an Uber-Coder, I wanna get in shape, and I want a date.

I also need to enforce my work ethic. Frankly, I feel like I slack off too much. Nothing wrong with being slack when it's time to be slack, but...
