And my first ++ to a perlmonks-vote for making me look up 'onomatope' in a dictionary...cool word (/me giggles)

Now I don't feel so bad. I ran right off and checked the definition before voting.

So did I, but I typed it into Google before going to a proper dictionary site. The first link was to BrainyDictionary.com, which gives the defintion "An imitative word; an onomatopoetic word.", which helps a great deal.

Quite a few of these aren't really onomatopes in any strict sense of the word, but almost all of the ones that don't fit into that category might reflect what some people call a "phonosemantic" aspect. (See Margaret Magnus' dissertation as well.) Magnus (borrowing from Humboldt) would say that words like whirl, rip, and hiccup are iconic, but not onomatopoeic. </pedantry>

I voted vroom because merlyn isn't an onomatope.

Maybe we just haven't yet discovered whatever it is that makes the sound 'merlyn'.

It's entirely possible that if we had microphones sensitive enough to pick up the hum of electricity running through RAM, we would hear 'merlyn' when a Schwartzian Transform is executed. Perhaps that's its secret.

I had 'slurp' selected, but as I was gazing upon the remainder of the options, I actually hiccupped (before I saw the 'hiccup' option!). I then saw the 'hiccup' option and was forced to change my vote to 'hiccup'. I mean, it had to have been meant to be, right? :)
