pdltiger has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hey Monks! The PDL developers are trying to get an idea of how people do (or don't) use PDL. If you've ever tried to install PDL, whether or not you succeeded, we'd appreciate if you could fill out a survey. You can find it here: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=MJKdOtMGh_2bGB5zO9ZBlFWA_3d_3d.

The survey is limited to 100 respondents, so if you've never heard about PDL, we'd appreciate if you refrained from taking the survey. However, if you'd like to learn more, check out PDL's website.

Thanks!

I don't use numerical processing, but my wife is a physicist and she uses Matlab and Maple a lot (on Vista and Ubuntu; the latter runs the same code 20 times faster :). I tried to teach her some Perl and PDL, but when she saw that it doesn't have Matlab-like IDE, she immediately gave up. Something like this should be in the options for the last question of the survey.

The installation from the CPAN shell and from the Ubuntu repository is very smooth to my taste, but i use CPAN every day and i am used to its quirks, so other people's mileage may vary.

We always talk on the mailing list about how an IDE would be nice. Just yesterday I realized that it shouldn't be too terribly hard to create a PDL extension for Padre, in which case we would have something that would look VERY much like Matlab/IDL/Maple. I'm not sure if it'll happen, but it actually appears feasable. Stay tuned. :)
