I already posted this as a reply to the "Visual Studio & Active State" post...but since it looked like more that a couple were interested...

www.solutionsoft.com has already developed and IDE for Perl called Perl Builder. If I remember correctly as of now it supports Active Perl5. I use it often at work and though I am new to Perl, I find it very helpful in Perl Development.

Suffice to say the I don't like Microsoft. I resent having to pay more for software than I do in living expenses. Solution Soft offers a trial period with their Perl IDE. My own biases towards the MacroSoft Corporation make me hope that they do not corner the market on yet another facet to the Computer/Software Development Industry.

OH YEAH!!! Solution Soft posted word that a Linux Version of their Perl IDE is in the works and should be released soon!!!

    HA! vi is the only IDE anyone should ever need! You young whippersnappers of today don't appreciate what we went through in 1995, what with...oh never mind. Your post is a belated answer to my question about Perl Development Environments.

      why in my day, there wasn't any of this fancy 'auto-auto indenting' I had
      to hit ESC and type:set aito get my IDE to auto indent for me.
      And colored syntax? Yeah, we had that. Light green for the characters and
      and dark green for the background.
      And another thing...we didn't have those fancy Quake/Diablo games to play
      to unwind. We telneted to port 2800 of sneezy.cc.utexas.edu and MUD'd.
      We had to use our imagination! yeah! :)

    I've checked out the solutionsoft IDE and it looks like a nice tool, though I think for the average programmer, $149 is a bit steep for what it does. Many of us who use Perl are open-source and GNU oriented and prefer tools that reflect that philosophy. The main selling point that I see is that solutionsoft does not appear to be Microsoft-related. This is a Good Thing.

    As for myself, I enjoy a good IDE, but have mostly valued them for their debugging capability. Perl has a great command line debugger and a free GUI debugger is being developed. It has a ways to go, but it's a great tool.

    A free Perl IDE called CodeMagic has been a useful tool for me and the author is VERY anti-Microsoft and doesn't care for ActiveState Perl. The IDE is a tad buggy and I could never get the debugger to work properly, but it's saved me a bit of time. (Note: As of this posting, the CodeMagic site was down).

    For those of us who enjoy IDEs, I think we'll have to be patient. Still, I'm glad to see that others are working on this (I don't have the skill to do so).
