I once came across an O'Reilly Python Forum during a search for other information.

It's certainly not as complete as The Monastery, but it might be of use to you.

Looks like an opportunity for someone to become the "Vroom" of Python ;-)

...it's not only a matter of getting the correct software and administering it well. It's also a matter of finding a population that is as cool as we are.

Sometimes what looks like an opportunity is really a fool's errand. --- Vincent

...All the world looks like -well- all the world, when your hammer is Perl.

The forum is shutting down. Pity....
        Shame..it was a good idea
Ther reason is 'SPAM'. I would say it should be controlled by many person as in perlmonks to effectively remove the spam. But it also can be handled single handed if volume is low.

When will it be up and running pythonmonks?

There was a Pythonmonks once, back when the Perlmonks server was running at blockstackers. It was built on the Everything engine and was quite similar in feel to this site. I guess it was dropped when Pair Networks began to host us.

I don't think it was ever officially opened to the public. As far as I know, the only useful thing to come out of it was the green theme that is now available on here on Perlmonks.

Plankton tried to setup one use the everything engine but it died when he lost interest. It was called "Snake Handlers".

There will be. Oh yes, there will be.

Disclaimer: there will be 342 replies to this saying "yeah right" and "I'll believe it when I see it." Please ignore this non-believers, they know not the errors of their ways.

So on with the details. I have such a project that will be completed by September 1st, 2003. The engine for the site will be custom written (utilizing mod_python) and most likely released under the GPL. It will be substantially different from Perlmonks (there will be no "experience point" system, levels, or any of that related troll-attracting sillyness) while still implementing some of the better features such as the chat integration. The moderation system is a major component of the site, it'll be somewhere between slash and everything, more on this later. We haven't decided on a name yet (that will come much later" but the forum will definately not be called "PythonMonks." To do so would seem like a cheap ripoff and would imply an association with this site. Like I said, it will be fairly different.

A separate python archive site will also be launched on that date. This will be very similar to CPAN, as to be honest, CPAN's setup kicks ass on many levels. This will be very separate from the forum site though.

Now 4 months is a fair amount of time, and someone may very well finish a similar project by then. More power to them if they do, and I wish them the best of luck. However, the forum and archive (and a couple other extras) will be completed regardless. So take a careful look around on September 1st :)

While the new engine and site are cool and all, I think that best things (and PerlMonks is among them) should be taken into consideration and studied from. Something like a web ring of sites like this for different languages would really help to bring developer crowd closer together and share the minds. It even might decrease the amount of useless flames on the web, who knows. :)

I should clarify. By "association" I meant being owned/operated by the same people.

As for bringing them together under a single web ring, it's not something I would want to rule out, but I'm not sure of the advantages. I guess it all depends on how you go about implementing it. I have a feeling it would end up either as a few links on the bottom of a page, or some sort of tabbed virtual sections on a site that ends up reducing a site's character. In my opinion it would just be better to have members of each forum mention other sites if they have found them useful.
