'>pty>' means '&>pty>', not '1>pty>'
           The pseudo terminal redirects both stdout and stderr
           unless you specify a file descriptor.  If you want to
           grab stderr separately, do this:

              start \@cmd, '<pty<', \$in, '>pty>', \$out, '2>', \$err ;
