The escape sequence \Q ...\E  quotes, or protects most non-alphabetic characters. For instance,

   1. $x = "\QThat !^*&%~& cat!";
   2. $x =~ /\Q!^*&%~&\E/; # check for rough language

It does not protect $ or @ , so that variables can still be substituted.
