Hey Everyone!

I came up with this (IMO) cool idea to create some totally new icons with labels like 'Powered by PerlMonks' or 'Powered by Everything' or 'Powered by Perl' so that people here at the monastary could have little bumper stickers of art goodness. I was discussing it in the CB for a while, before posting this, and have been considering it for a while, since I am a graphics artist, and love to create purposeful and useful art for people!

So I was wondering if it was a great idea or not, and if so, if anyone else would like to help me create a small collection of these icons possibly, and then we could be like the creators of these collections or something, and distribute them freely to anyone here that wanted to use them on their home node, or even on other sites, provided that there is no copyright problems or anything by using the names 'Everything' and 'Perl Monks' etc.

If you are interested in this idea and would like to help me out, please either reply to this node, or /msg bladx sometime and let me know what you think! If you think it's just a good idea, but don't want to make any, that's fine too! It's just an idea, and I hope it would be popular someday, for the finer side of the art that Perl deserves. :)

ActiveState has those nifty Perl Inside stickers (which they appear to distribute an each conference they sponsor). I'll try to get a pic of it.
Update: If someone cares, a lousy webcam pic of Perl Inside sticker from activestate.

I seem to remember that Intel didn't like it, when the "Linux Inside" logo came out.

Basically they contacted the author and told him to get rid of it. We don't see that parody logo so often, nowadays...

Those look awesome! If I made some icons, I wonder if some of them might look similar if it was ok to do.

      Thanks for the feedback Beatnik!

Note: I sent Vroom a pm to let him know about this idea, maybe it could turn out to be a reality soon!

I think there's a TrueType Font somewhere which has alot of 'inside' spoofs... further investigation showed it's called devilinside. Check Google's results too.

O'Reilly (owners of the Camel trademark) have these icons/buttons/graphics. They are not PM-specific, but they are approved uses of the Camel image and very spiffy for the most part.
Pretty nice--I might grab one of those for one of my own pages (after converting to PNG).

Whenever it comes to graphics I feel the urge to fire up gimp once again and fiddle around a bit :)
Well, I do hereby offer my help, unless it will take mere loads of my time. Actually I'm in the process of buying a new PC within the next week after 6 years(!!) and that will make graphics a whole lot more fun :)
If you need some references: I did the logos for SANE BraveGNUWorld and some other stuff

    Regards... Stefan

I have a ton of fonts, too bad photoshop can't handle more than 1500(for the last two years i've been complaining that their font engine -or- library sucks), and that's not the only problem ;D

One of these even features vroom - without permission for now.

I really really really like the last one, even though it's recycled from someprevious stuff.

    Enjoy powered.by.perlmonks

Disclaimer: Don't blame. It came from inside the void

    perl -e "$q=$_;map({chr unpack qq;H*;,$_}split(q;;,q*H*));print;$q/$q;"

    cool.

i took a sabbatical from the monastery and, while i was gone, i was actually thinking along similar lines -- specifically, i was thinking of a spinning pearl with the word "perl" emblazoned on it. i'd like one with no extra text, but also making available with "powered by Perl" and "powered by perlmonks" taglines would be cool.

my two cents on the intel-like "Perl inside" logo: i'd rather not. it's not that clever a logo in the first place, and spoofing it just doesn't seem worthwhile. it was cute the first time i saw "big brother inside" but after that, i think it's gotten old. and really, the more you spoof something like that, the more you're acknowledging its power. and i'd rather not reinforce intel's domination of the market, ya know? besides which, perl isn't really in competition with intel. let intel have their logo. we've got the camel and, if we want it, the pearl.

okay, maybe that was more like a dime. anyway...

Update OeufMayo pointed out that animations might be considered harmful, or at least tacky. probably for website-like purposes, the pearl should not be spinning. but if one were also *cough* working on a game written in perl, or some other inherently visually active situation, an animated pearl would not be over the top. so, perhaps, a place for such a thing could be found.

Thanks for showing interest by submitting all of the great ideas, and comments!

If you would like to be part of this project, just /msg bladx :) and we'll talk about it!

"vroom says (on this topic) it'd definitely be cool to come up with icons people can download and stickers would be cool too although that tends to cost money"

So it seems like I have a green light to try it out :)...
Please keep those cool ideas churning!
