Because the dot . doesn't match the newline character. Unless you add the /s modifier to your regex.

Thank you, moritz. But changing the cgm to cgms causes $1 on the marked line to capture everything including the "Smart Comments"	[reply]

Yes, that's because the `(?!\s*###+)` only needs to match once, at the end of a line. You need to modify the regex to have match at start of every line. Perl 6 - the future is here, just unevenly distributed	[reply] [d/l]
