I'm not sure what isn't working for you. You don't need to escape the equal sign, and yes, you need the "d" modifier, unless you're actually replacing the "=" with a space. So, first, to delete it entirely:

$fcast =~ tr/=//d;
[download]

and now to replace it with a space:

$fcast =~ tr/=/ /;
[download]
