I think I'd prefer
HTML::Entities
version of
encode_entities
, because then they show up as nice names, as well as handling the common less-than, greater-than problems.

Thank you merlyn, I was successful on encoding "Hauptstraße" with HTML::Entities, but not with the node starter code snippet. It saved my life.
