The variable $replace contains two characters, \ and n. You can create a Perl expression from its value and evaluate it:

s/$search/'"'.$replace.'"'/eeg;
[download]

don't do that, string eval is string eval (dangerous), provide some safety, use String::Interpolate or String::Interpolate::RE or another similar abstraction instead	[reply]
