Microcebus has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Dear Monks

I'm running some simple perl scripts for processing and analysing high througput genomic sequencing data on my local desktop pc in my office. Since these jobs can take up several days, I wonder if there is a possibility to implement some simple perl code that sends me an email message when the job is finished

Faced with a similar situation, I've used Email::Send::Gmail with success. You will need a gmail account.	[reply]

Use MIME::Lite, configure it to speak SMTP with the mailserver that your usual mail program uses. Alexander -- Today I will gladly share my knowledge and experience, for there are no sweeter words than "I told you so". ;-)	[reply]

Unrelated to your question but when I run programs that take days I also mail myself when the program dies. Additionally I try to save as much program state information as possible before the actual `'die'` - so if the program died after two days I dont have to wait another two days to see if I have fixed the bug. Hi, I agree with afoken. MIME::Lite is an excellent module. If you are on Windows, you can try DWIM Perl, because it already has MIME::Lite included.
