Suwen has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

hi monks,

I am trying to write a perl script to extract the search keywords of each popular search engine from a log file.

I want to get the information about all the format which those search engine use. For example, in Yahoo, they use "Yahoo", "Yahoo.com", "p". Also, I'd like to know if there are good examples where I can refer.

Thanks
Suwen

You've got a pretty long row to hoe in front of you. I'm guessing that you're working on the referrer logs for your website, and want to see what terms people used to find your site.

I did something like this (and the results are pretty interesting, scary and funny (and definitely R-rated) ) but I had to go via empirical examination of the log files.

Try to narrow down what it is you actually want to know, and try to get the handful of engines that give you 90% of what it is you're looking for.
