I agree with pretty much that has been said, but would like to add one thing: be a little humble. There are some things that matter and make for better programming, and somethings that are just your style. Perl is the king of accomplishing the same thing almost countless ways.
While teaching and guiding in proper methodologies, be sure to allow your pupil to express his/her individuality. It's part of what make us human.
