If you actually do mean write and format (which is not clear from your description), then you might want to look at write/format hash data to a scalar in multi-line columns, which is also somewhat covered in perldoc perlform and perlfaq5 or "perldoc -q 'How can I write'" (which returns "How can I write into a string").
