BingFarz has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Hi:

I recently created a group on Linkedin - Perl Monger's Duluth, I think it should be Perl Mongers Duluth, and I tried adding a web site on Perl Mongers - and ended up being directed to - I believe - Perl.Org, where I signed up and got access to all kinds of subversion directories, but I still have no idea how to set up a Perl Mongers location on Perl Mongers.

Of course, I want to point out that, until a little over a week ago I had no idea what a Monger was --- tricky learning curve. Any way, as we currently have no other Duluth Mongers ( although actually Monger is a local name ) ... anyway, sooner or later I'll figure out how to get rid of the apostrophe in Linkedin... I hope, but I would like some guidance on where or how the Perl Monger sites exist or are loaded.

And thanks for all the supportive, stuff that was written about learning Perl..... ( I hate to say this but, so far - learning Perl is like dropping off of a 6 story building into the rose bushes. You have to hope that the person who takes care of the roses works really hard )....

The main Perl Mongers web site is at www.pm.org. If you go there, you can find information about existing Perl Mongers groups and information about starting a new group. If you check out the Group Hosting FAQ, near the bottom of the page is an FAQ on "How do I request a new group or to reactivate a group that has been inactive?". That should get you started in the right direction.

And it should be noted that it takes a while. I requested early last week for a slc-pm group (Salt Lake City), and haven't yet had a response. I trust it will happen eventually, but one can't be too demanding when it's all handled by volunteers who presumably have lives, work, families, etc., to prioritize.

    Whilst you're learning:
    1. LinkedIn (hosts/exploits/however-you-want-to-describe it) a Perl Mongers (without any apostrophe) area. Among other approaches, your friend big G will find it for you.
    2. Learning to use your friend effectively is a tangential but valuable addition to whatever Perl-skill-level you develop.
    3. Even a cursory stroll through the Monastery should persuade you that the gardeners here do, in fact, take really good care of the rose bushes, firefighter-type catch'em nets, and other aids for the newcomer.

And, utterly offtopic, did anyone else notice that LinkedIn also presents itself (in the logotype at the top of the first page found by my search) as "Linkedin©" (with a lower-case "i" and the whole word "in" in white on a blue bg? :-)>
