I'd suggest:

my $a_ext=quotemeta($a).$ext;
[download]

... because this will cope better when $a contains "special" characters such as "[" or "+".

package Cow { use Moo; has name => (is => 'lazy', default => sub { 'Mooington' }) } say Cow->new->name
