I was doing a lot of things wrong - thanks guys (Rolf particularly for the quick response) - I need to read up perl regular expressions more as I clearly suck at it	[reply]

:) A good place to start is perlintro, Pattern Matching, Regular Expressions, and Parsing, perlfaq6, perlrequick, perlretut Start typing up a directory with short 5-10 line programs (including data) to explore 2-3 regex letters (or one line from previous tutorials) -- regex are compact/dense, this technique helped me remember stuff	[reply]
