perlperlperl has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I have learned the stuff in the "Learning Pearl" book. I am planning on going through "Intermediate Perl." Does anyone know if the topics of special built in variables like the record separator. I looked at Intermediate Perls table of contents and could not tell. I know from looking at "Mastering Perl" table of contents that this sort of stuff is not talked about. Wondering if anyone has experience with "Intermediate Perl"

Read perlvar to learn about Perl's special variables. Read Intermediate Perl for a nice introduction to Perl's references, objects, modules, and other "intermediate" topics, including unit testing.

Whether or not Intermediate Perl addresses special variables in any depth, it's still a great book as that next step after finishing Learning Perl.

I am not sure about "Intermediate Perl", but I have "Programming Perl" here (4th edition). In Chapter 25: Special Names, there is a section Special Variables in Alphabetical Order (page 767).

Maybe it's just me. But I can't help but wonder - why would you not want to Master Perl :)

Seriously though, it's a series. So if you're studying Perl this way, read them in order.

But even that course of action doesn't preclude you getting both and flipping through the Mastering volume to get deeper into something you're currently working with...
