Yes. You :) Use Devel::Peek on $arg in the subroutine before and after you assign to it. Eg:

sub xx {
     my $arg;
     Dump( $arg );
     $arg =  shift;
     Dump( $arg );
     print "(" . ($arg & "") . ")\n";
 }
