My guess is that it’s a reference to Enlightenment, “a stacking window manager for the X Window System” of which E17 is the latest release:

Version 0.17, also referred to as E17, was in development for 12 years starting in December 2000 until 21 December 2012 when it was officially presented to the world as a stable release.
