Option for MetaCPAN in cpan links

Fellow Monks,

As times change, so do services, and CPAN is not an exception to that. In the recent years, a site called MetaCPAN has cropped up and it provides a more modern look & feel, easier-to-remember URLs, and an all in all nicer user experience than the classic CPAN site. It supposedly also has a nice API, but I haven’t dug into that so far.

It’s a complete mirror and contains everything that the classic CPAN does. Here are some example pages:

Plack::Builder module
Plack release
Spreadsheet-ParseExcel release — note the use of a dash here, and ~~PAAMAYIM_NEKUDOTAYIM~~ double-colons in module URLs

Additional niceties include an easy switch between CPAN and BackPan versions anywhere, source code highlighting, easy links to Changes and the release browser, and more

So, having said all that — I’d like to have an option in the display settings for the cpan:// links to go to MetaCPAN instead of the classic site, if that’s possible.

I wouldn't be too eager to redirect the `[mod://...]` and `[cpan://...]` shortcuts. Authors chose their links as they intended (or so I hope). But if you look at What shortcuts can I use for linking to other information? you will find `[metamod://...]` and `[metacpan://...]` which behave just like the 'mod' and 'cpan' shortcuts, except that they point to http://metacpan.org instead of http://search.cpan.org. Oh, indeed — I hadn’t bumped into those codes. But even so, there’s already an option in Display Settings where one can (sort of) change the behaviour of the `[cpan://...]` command, only for one’s own viewing pleasure. So I wonder if it’s possible to make them all behave like `[meta{mod,cpan}://...]` commands, or feasible at all. Besides hacking around with LanX’s script that is :) Might be just me, but I really dislike the old CPAN now that there’s a nicer one — and I bet there are some oldskool people out there who would get uneasy about people linking to MetaCPAN. So that’s why I’m thinking it might serve a good purpose as a display setting.	[reply] [d/l] [select]

I once wrote a nodelet hack to redirect links to "wrong" PM domains. Free Nodelet Hack: "No-LogOut-Links" - Fix links to other PM-domains You might want to adjust the JS to your needs, shouldn't be difficult. If you succeed please post the result for others to profit. I applaud the metacpan effort, and often find it more usable than the classic search.cpan.org, it is often slower, and it feels like it has more downtime. Once that's fixed, I'd support the move to make `[mod://]` links etc. point to metacpan instead. Perl 6 - the future is here, just unevenly distributed	[reply] [d/l]
