FWIW, I don't PDL, but if I did, I'd ask:

What type of piddle?

this suggests size limits beyond available memory

$size = howbig($piddle->get_datatype);

Maybe you can assign to nelem?

OTOH zentara says in RFC: PDL Cheat Sheet that PDL has a limit set of 30000 elements that 30k

    Thank you. I found what I was looking for in the PDL cheat sheet.There is a module to print any size piddle and override the 30000 elements limit.
