The space between the two minus signs is significant; otherwise Perl thinks you're trying to decrement a constant.

+foo

$perl -wle " print -+-+-foo "
-foo

$perl -wle " print +-+-+-foo "
-foo

$perl -wle " print -+-+-+-foo "
