As the documentation said, it circumvents prototypes (if any). But the more cromulent reason is that it's the Perl4-style function call syntax which hasn't been needed for almost two decades. (And I think we all can agree on that we want to move past Perl 4.)	[reply]

Not sure why anyone would want to move beyond Perl 4.
