Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Is there a freeware Perl compiler to use. I don't know much about Perl but would like to learn how programs are writen, run, and tested. I thought it would be easy to find a link to a site that would offer the core but there was just so much info and little resources. Is there such a thing or do I have to buy the software even though I might not like it..? Regards to all Khalid,,,

You can get everything you need to run Perl on just about any Operating System you can imagine (and some you can't) at Perl.com. If you're on the Windows platform, another fine place to look is ActiveState.

There's no need for a fancy development environment or a special editor like you'd see for Visual Foo or whatever, but Perl.com has fine links to freely available IDEs. Start there, and you'll do fine.
