what's the favorite report system for perl web application?

Thai Heng has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I want to develop a heavy database web application using catalyst and postgres, and so report demand is also heavy. I want to know what's the prefer report system? Using the open and popular report system, such as Birt? or there are some report system best practice in perl web application?

I decide to use dojo as my js framework. Can I use dojo as report system?

You can pretty much use anything. We've previously used ColdFusion (okay, bad idea, but we needed good-looking reports fast and it was quicker to get a ColdFusion contractor to knock them out; ditched it because we evolved to the point it was no longer dependable or fast enough), a custom-built Perl solution (worked, but not flexible enough to keep up), and are now switching over to Jaspersoft, which looks to be both flexible enough and fast enough for the time being. Choose whatever you're comfortable with, that will keep up with the demands, and that runs quickly enough to get the reports out in the time you need. On a quick Google I don't see a specific report-builder framework for Dojo. If you know Birt and it meets your needs, no reason to not use it.	[reply]

+1 for Jaspersoft (we're using it at my workplace and are quite satisfied). From my experience, the one thing that can make reporting easier (or a lot harder) is the structure of the DB/stored data, so I believe putting an extra effort in DB design with reporting in mind is a smart move ..	[reply]
