PS: honestly, the success of Ruby (which is semantically Perl plus a default OO system) shows that a trendy Perl was possible.
Take a time machine trip to 2000, put another lexer/parser on top of the P5 engine (still compatible to old modules) and give it a flashy name like "Brilliant (Perl)".
IMHO turning the wheel is still possible...
