Yes : "." is the current directory, and ".." is one level above. These are not files. It is traditional for them to be viewed in a directory listing. What is the sound of Perl? Is it not the sound of a wall that people have stopped banging their heads against? -Larry Wall, 1992	[reply]

On a Unix-y or POSIX-y system, directories are a special case of files, as are named pipes, device files, and a few other things. They are not regular files. Directories can be treated as files in some cases, but it is generally undesirable to do so. It's best to test.	[reply]
