My thought is this: In order to maintain balance in the universe, 0 must have an appropriate counter number, otherwise 0 would become a singularity! So has the appropriate characteristics, to counteract the infinite smallness of 0.

You could look at it like 0 with a twist. Maybe it's a ALIVE, pulsating between it's 0 and twisted state. :-)
