Where are $now1 and $then1 given values? Looks like the eval statements must do it. If you step thru using the debugger, do you see they are defined inside the if statements?

Yes, the eval does set those two values. That is what had me going with this. They did in fact show up during the eval, but went undefined as soon as I got to the body of the if statement. poj hit on my obvious mistake in scoping shortly after you posted.
