curses color bar graph?

butchie3980 has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

has anyone figured out how to make a color bar graph using ncurses? So far all I can find is filling a progressbar with ascii characters, which doesn't quite meet the requirement....unless I can fill that progressbar with spaces that have a colored background (is that possible?)
