fionbarr has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

I've done a new installation of Active Perl v18 and when trying to run CPAN I'm getting the following error:
LWP failed with code[500] message[Can't connect to ppm.activestate.com +[80] <10061>] Help please.

Do you need to configure a proxy?

    G'day fionbarr,

See HTTP Status Code Definitions for explanations of code[500] (and other status codes).

"CPAN down again..." was posted in the last hour: no doubt the cause of the error "when trying to run CPAN".

Update: See marto's reply to this post. CPAN being down seemed to be the most likely explanation; however, not the right explanation in this case.

ppm.activestate.com is unrelated to the issues at search.cpan.org.

Update: For clarity, only the web based search interface to cpan is having issues, this has no impact on downloading from cpan.org or any of it's hundreds of mirrors.

Thanks for the correction. I've updated my post. ++ (when the Vote Fairy next makes her rounds :-)

500, of course, is “internal server error,” and this has been talked about before.   And, as a simple DuckDuckGo search for “500 ppm activestate com” tells me, also here and here.
