Thank you for this really nice node. I don't suppose after many years that you would have more information on how to find that study? I'd really like to read it and be able to cite it directly myself later.

    You’re welcome. I don’t think I ever knew the details of the study, only its outline and conclusion. And at this remove I can’t even remember where I read (or heard?) about it. :-(

      The PQ4R method places great weight on questions -- both asking them and answering them. In a seminal study by Frase (1975), a group of subjects read a text with an instruction to generate questions based on it. A second group were given the questions generated by the first group, and instructed to read the text with the goal of answering them. A third group just read the text. Later, all subjects were given a test on which some of the items were relevant to the text, and others were not. Subjects in the two groups did much better on this test than did those in the control group.

      The Frase study in question would be found in Psychology of Learning & Motivation: v.9, Volume 9.

      This may not be the exact study you mentioned, but it's certainly similar. There's a lot out there now built on PQ4R as well as other educational methods informed by the study.
