Anonymous Monk has asked for the wisdom of the Perl Monks concerning the following question:

Is there any way that I can view the total number of users here at www.perlmonks.org, and also the percent of users that are actually active here? I am considering spending time at this site some more, but would like to know how active it really is, as opposed to news groups.

You want to take a look at jcwren's stats page.

As regards to how well the site is frequented, I just asked a question, and I received the first response 13 minutes later. That kind of turn-around is pretty typical of the site.

    Jim,

The thing to consider in determining how useful this site is, is not just the number of users or how many are logged on at any one time. Rather, consider the "signal to noise" ratio. You will find on this site some of the most knowledgeable Perl people in the world. People who are truly "gods" of the Perl language.

I doubt you would find such a concentrated and dedicated group of Perl experts anywhere else.

        with the rider "online."
You could of course also take IRC on (for example) irc.rhizomatic.net. There you can find #perl and #perl-help. But PerlMonks is without any doubt the best resource you can find.

Maclir has it right. It's not a numbers game. It's qualitative and unmeasurable. But I can say I learnt a shed load about perl through being plugged in here the last few weeks, and I don't know where else I could have got that; plus it's a pretty courteous and entertaining community. Give it a wherl.
