in reply to Perl script does not work on other directories?

Run the following one-liner in your CLI within the directory whose files you want to check:
perl -nE 'say qq(found $1 in $ARGV, line $.) if /(my search string)/; +close ARGV if eof;' ./*
Of course you replace "my search string" by the string or pattern you are looking for.

A program should be light and agile, its subroutines connected like a string of pearls. The spirit and intent of the program should be retained throughout. There should be neither too little or too much, neither needless loops nor useless variables, neither lack of structure nor overwhelming rigidity." - The Tao of Programming, 4.1 - Geoffrey James
