When I moved from Los Angeles to Salt Lake City in February of 2013, I looked around for a local PerlMongers group, but only found old mailing list archives from a short-lived group over a decade earlier. So I investigated http://www.pm.org/start/, checked out irc.perl.org#mongers, found a location to begin having meetings, set up our website and a mailing list, and had our first meeting in April, 2013. Nearly every meeting since then has been hosted (with food) at the Bluehost/Mojo offices in Draper, UT.

We've had meetings most months since.

Our lowest turnout to a meeting was around six, and our highest was over 100 (Damian Conway was in town). Now several of the local Mongers are working together with the conferences committee in planning YAPC::NA::2015 - Salt Lake City.

Some of our members have found work through other members of SLPM... and conversely a few businesses have found new team members through SLPM. While I'd like to see an even larger group, frankly it's hard to imagine a better outcome.

Seriously, if there isn't a Perl Mongers group in your area, and you live in an area where you think there might be a handful of enthusiasts within driving range, start a group.
