There's some information about the setup here, which lists (IMO) the priorities in recording. Also, you can see the original overlay for GPW here - of note is that the aspect ratio of the input from the speaker's computer means you can't fill the screen and show the speaker at the same time without the risk of obscuring parts of the slides (which negates priority number 2).

Having done recording of some Perl conferences with different setups since around 2016 (for example) I've learnt that this is all a set of compromises unless you're willing to pay an exorbitant cost. Having been involved in organising a few workshops I'm also seeing that sponsor visibility on the recordings is a nice incentive for them, and that all feeds back into the running of these workshops. I'll be at GPW next year to again record talks so am happy to tweak this if needs be, but i think the current solution works pretty well given the aforementioned list of priorities.
