Short reply from my mobile...I will reply more fully when I get to a proper keyboard...

Both strict and warnings are enabled. The Dumper line is added to the existing code of the OAuth2 module as suggested on another node. I've checked that the module has strict and warnings turned on. So it is strange that the dereference isn't throwing an error or warning.

I'm using Perl 5.16.3

    strict and warnings both support lexical scoping, so it's possible that strict has been locally disabled.

    (And it's good to know the version of Perl you're using! :)
