As an Australian cricket fan, the word Sledge has a completely different meaning to me! Even the British (notably the Barmy Army) have become highly skilled at sledging nowadays ... so, given American English prefers "sled" to "sledge", I feel the case for "sled" over "sledge" is overwhelming.

Actually, I quite like "sleigh" (a sled on runners pulled by reindeer used to convey people over ice or snow) for the pleasant images it brings to my mind ... imagining LanX now, whip in hand, clad in Lederhosen after eating gingerbread under the Christmas tree, gliding over the snow on his reindeer-powered sleigh -- and yes LanX, I am sledging you now! :)
