Original MATLAB was in Fortran (see https://fortran-lang.discourse.group/t/compiling-the-original-matlab/1074 for how to compile the 1982 code). For MATLAB-ish functionality in Perl (and PDL) using wrappers for LAPACK, use PDL::LinearAlgebra.
