I had exactly the same problem in Ashfield, NSW (Sydney suburb) as a schoolboy. The school was nearby but an alternative route generally avoided the problem. No idea how they dealt with that — we moved to the Hunter Valley not long after which put sufficient distance between us and the smell. :-)

    Close to the Parramatta River, perhaps ?
    Back in the 70's that river could get pretty ripe.
    I think they've significantly improved it now, by simply reducing the amount of pollutants that enter it.
    Are you still in the Hunter ?

      This would have been mid-60s. I was very young; I don't recall much about the surrounding area; I do remember the horrible cheese smell.

      I'm no longer in NSW; I've been in Melbourne for the past 40+ years.
